Teaching Our youth
See Prov. 22:6. “Train up a child in the way he should go.” Children must be taught. It pays not to wait for others to train our children, we should make sure it is being done ourselves. How are we going to accomplish that noble objective as we deal with our children? It can be done three ways.
I. By What We Read
(Psm. 119:11) The most important thing to read is our Bibles. Sad to say, so many spend more time browsing through the local newspaper, watching TV, or being on the Internet, than they do reading the Word of God. If the Word of God is read and hidden in our hearts, then we will not sin against God. First, the Word of God has a purifying effect. If we want our children to live clean, godly lives, then we must encourage them to make the Scripture a vital part of their daily lives. Secondly, it has a clarifying effect. As we study the Bible, we find the direction we should go with our lives from day to day. It also has a solidifying effect. It is the Bible that will make us solid.
II. By What We Say
(Col. 4:6). First we need suggestive speech. It should be so geared that it lets our family know the grace of God is in our hearts. We should want others to know our soul is under the influence of the Redeemer. It should also be seasoned speech. The expression “seasoned with salt.” Salt in our food seasons it. By comparison grace should flavor our speech that it should be courteous and kind in its quality. Speak right before your kids.
III. By What We Do
Someone said, “Your life speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say.” If we say one thing, and do another in front of our children we cannot properly train them. If we want them to be kind, we should be kind in front of them. If we want them to be hard workers, we should work hard as they view us. If we want them to pray, they should know that we pray and seek God. If we want them to go to church, then we should go and set the proper example for them to follow. According to our text verse, proper training does pay off great dividends!
