A Free People
Romans 6:18 says, “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.” One thing that we should cherish is our freedom. If we were to count our many blessings, right at the top of the list would be something we call freedom. It could be defined as “exemption from external control, interference, or regulation.” It also can mean, “the right to enjoy all the special rights and privileges of citizenship.” Spiritually speaking, God's redeemed people are free or better yet “free indeed.” Look at a few aspects of our spiritual freedom.
I. The Agent of Our Freedom
In Jn. 8:32 Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” It is God's Word that cuts us loose from the old life and brings us into a new one. Truth actually worked on us before we were saved, in the sense that it made us aware of our sinful condition. It brought about conviction or the sense of sin in us. Aren't you glad someone preached it to you?
II. The Acknowledgment of Our Freedom
If Jesus says we are free, it is our responsibility to acknowledge that fact, that we might live a more effective Christian life. Those who have been set free spiritually by the power of God must know Jesus has declared them free. If we are free from sin, we have no business allowing sin to dominate in us.
III. The Aspects of Our Freedom
In what sense is the child of God set free? First, from the penalty of sin (Rom. 6:23). The wages of sin is death or eternal separation from Holy God forever and ever. Secondly, from the power of sin (Rom. 6:14). It says, “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” There is an implanted “new nature” that overcomes that old Adamic nature we took on when we were born. Thirdly, we will be delivered from the very presence of sin. We will be free to enjoy the perfect world called Heaven one day. We are not trying to be justified by the deeds of the law, but through personal faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
IV. The Acclamation of Our Freedom
If we have been set free spiritually, then we can tell others what has happened to us. There are so many folks today bound by sin and in the clutches of evil people, we must proclaim what Christ has done for us in salvation. The sinner does not have to stay bound, for Christ has promised him freedom if he will come by the way of the cross. Enjoy your freedom!
