The Believer's Attitude
The attitude of the child of God is a very important matter. Six times in Gen. 18 Abraham prays to God and six times the answer “yes” came. His attitude was humble, reverent, bold and persistent. His mental posture had a great deal to do with getting the answers he needed. It is not your aptitude but your attitude that determines your altitude.
I. We Need An Attitude of Looking
See Heb. 12:2. We had better make sure that we look toward the Lord Jesus, looking away from our faults, failures and frustrations. It takes this special look to keep our attitude what it should be as we go through life.
II. We Need An Attitude of Listening
In Psm. 85:8 the psalmist said, “I will hear what God the Lord shall speak; for He will speak peace unto His people.” The psalmist is seeking the Lord for the people and desiring to communicate an answer from God for them. If we will listen to the Lord He will say what we need to hear. Too many times we talk too much and do not listen enough.
III. We Need An Attitude of Learning
Jesus said in Matt. 11:29 “Learn of me.” No matter how much you know about spiritual things, there is always something more to learn about the things of God. In fact, we should never stop learning about the Lord in daily life. We are to be good pupils in the school of Christ.
IV. We Need An Attitude of Living
Paul said in Phil. 1:21, “For me to live is Christ.” There is nothing deficient about the Christian life. It is a life lived in spiritual fulness. We should not say that for us to live is money, worldly pleasure, self, fame and power, but that for us to live is Christ. Christ was the essence and sum of Paul's life.
V. We Need An Attitude of Lying
In Psm. 23:2 the Psalmist said, “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.” There is a mental, spiritual rest that only the child of God can experience. A sheep does not lie down unless it is assured the shepherd is nearby to protect and guard it from the danger of predators.
VI.We Need An Attitude of Loving
1 Jn. 4:21 says, “He who loveth God loves his brother also.” How much we love others depends to a large degree on how much we love the Lord. We may disagree with others; they may irritate us, but we are still to love them. Jesus loved us while we were enemies and alienated from Him by sin.
VII. We Should Have An Attitude of Longing
Read Psalm 119:174. The psalmist said he longed for God's salvation. God not only saves us from our sins, but he now saves us from sin's power and will ultimately save us one day from sin's presence. Our eternal abode will be a “holy” city (Rev. 21:2). Daily we need to be saved from sin's power and we should long for the day when sin will no longer be present. Long for what awaits us on the other side of death!
