Why God's Preachers Preach
Read 2 Tim. 4:2 where Paul commands, “Preach the Word, be instant in season and out of season…” God's men today are to preach! That is more than a lecture, it means to herald out the Truth. To “preach” means “to announce as a king's herald.” Why should we preach?
I. The Condition of Man Makes Preaching Necessary
In what kind of shape does a man without God find himself? The unsaved man is lost (Matt. 18:11); he is lifeless (Eph. 2:1); and he is Lordless (without Christ). The work of salvation is initiated by God Himself (Jn. 6:44). Salvation comes through saving faith in Christ (Acts 16:30-31). The Bible says, “How shall they hear without a preacher” (Rom. 10:14)?
II. The Command of the Word Makes Preaching Necessary
2 Tim. 4:2 says, “Preach the Word…” The verb preach is in the imperative mode, which means it is absolutely necessary. What God commands we must obey. Three things are evident from this verb preach. First, the “you” is the subject which is understood. If God has called you then you are to preach and not leave it to someone else. Preach is also in the active voice. That means you are to be busy about the matter of giving God's Word. Also, it is present tense which suggests a continual action or an ongoing process.
III. The Compulsion of Love Makes Preaching Necessary
See 2 Cor. 2:15. We want to preach to others because of our love for people and our desire to see them saved. It constrains us and holds us on the right course to see people saved, like the banks of a river holds the water to flow on course.
IV. The Compromise of the Church Makes Preaching Necessary
Look at 2 Tim. 4:3,4. Paul the Apostle predicts a day when men will want preachers to tell them what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. Truth can keep the church from compromise. Too often churches of today are more concerned with pleasing people instead of God. That is a definite sign of apostasy.
V. The Corridors of Hell Make Preaching Necessary
Psalm 9:17 says, “The wicked shall be turned into hell.” The only way we can keep people out of hell is to preach the Gospel of Christ. The rich man in hell (Luke 16:19-31) desired that someone go to his brothers on earth and preach to them, because he didn't want them to come to the place of torment. We must warn the hell-bound to flee God's wrath!
