Running the Race
Read Hebrews 12:1-2. The child of God is running a race. Very few people look bored and distant at a race, but Christians could well be indicted for being in such a condition. Consider with me some pertinent points about the race we entered into the day we were saved.
I. The Beginning Of The Race
It had to start somewhere. It began at the time of our new birth (Jn. 3:3). As well, it began when we offered ourselves unto God (Rom. 12:1,2). In addition, it began when we allowed purging to take place in our lives (2 Tim. 2:21). No one can run laden down with weights.
II. The Rules For The Race
You must run your race with your eyes on the Lord Jesus Christ (Heb. 12:2). When you take your eyes off Him you are in trouble. Make sure you run with a Heavenly affection, for we are to set our minds on this above (Col. 3:2). Do not neglect to run with your feet shod (Eph. 6-15). Our feet must be shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace. No decent race can take place without rules.
III. The Goals For The Race
First, you do not want to be a castaway or put on the shelf (1 Cor. 9:27). Secondly, you should desire to abound in the work of the Lord (1 Cor. 15:58). We should not only desire to run but to run well. Thirdly, make certain one of your goals is to lay up treasure in heaven (Matt. 6:20). You never go wrong when you have the right goals!
IV. The Course For The Race
There must be a prescribed course. We do several things in establishing our course. We contend for the faith (Jude 3); we abound in the Lord's work (1 Cor. 15:58); and we hold forth the Word of Life (Phil. 2:16).
V. The Schedule For The Race
Races are scheduled for a certain time. It is to be run now in this life (2 Sam. 14:14); it is to be run during the day (Jn. 9:4); and it is to be run during the harvest time (Luke 10:2).
VI. The Hindrances To The Race
There are several to consider. Unconfessed sin hinders (Rev. 2:5); a lack of love hinders (Luke 7:47); and a lack of faith hinders (Matt. 14:31).
VII. The Rewards After The Race
There are definite rewards at the finish line the faithful runner will enjoy. All runners will receive an incorruptible crown (1 Cor. 9:25). Faithful Christians will receive a crown of life (Rev. 2:10). Faithful pastors will have a crown of glory (1 Pet. 5:4). Run the race set before you well. Give it your best!
