Seven Pictures of a Christian
The greatest blessing in the world is to be a born-again child of God. Many in our world make fun of people who claim to be “born again.” I consider it a wonderful privilege to be regarded in that light. Some in the world portray God's people as weak and as a people full of fear. If they would only experience what God's people have, they would know better. Let's Look at pictures of the Christian.
I. A Pupil Sitting At Jesus' Feet
Read John 11:32. While Martha was busy with material things, Mary was attending to spiritual matters. She fell at Jesus' feet due to the sorrow the loss of their brother. Her faith can be seen as strong, for she believed that He could have prevented Lazarus from dying. It is essential that we be taught of the Lord to save us from the results of ignorance.
II. A Soldier Putting On His Armor
See Eph. 6:11. We know there is spiritual conflict. That is exactly why we need the whole armor of God. It is only as we take hold of the spiritual resources that are available to us that we will have the strength we need to stand against the strategies of the devil. Satan's reality necessitates armor.
III. A Runner Laying Aside Weights
Examine Heb. 12:1. No runner would run a race with weights tied to him. Athletes wear the weights in preparation for running. When the weights are taken off, a person is then prepared to run the race successfully.
IV. A Sower Sowing Beside Waters
Read Isa. 32:20. We are to spiritually sow the Word of God if spiritual fruit is to be produced. Compare Matthew 13. We are commanded to sow if others are to know eternal life.
V. An Ambassador Urging Men To Be Reconciled
Think about 2 Cor. 5:20. We are ministers of the message of reconciliation. Urgency should move us to act as a responsible ambassador.
VI. A Priest Offering Spiritual Sacrifices
Look at Rom. 12:1. The main spiritual sacrifice we should offer up is praise (Heb. 13:5). It is something that we should offer continually, lest we find ourselves, grumbling, moaning, and complaining.
VII. A Fisher Casting Out A Net
Consider Jn. 21:6. The disciples had not done very well fishing, so Jesus told them to cast their net on the right side of the ship. Obedience brought abundance.
