When John Saw Jesus

Read Rev. 1:10-20. As John was exiled on the Isle of Patmos he had a vision of Christ in His glory. No one is ever the same when they come face to face with Christ and when they have bathed in His glory. In vs. 10-20 various aspects of Christ's deity are portrayed.

I. His Garments

This speaks of Jesus as priest and judge. The golden girdle was used by the priests to bind garments higher on the body than at the loins. This is in keeping with the dignity and majesty of the high priest in order to give him greater ability to move about as he ministers. Gold in the Bible is a symbol of Deity.

II. His Hair

This speaks of the purity of Jesus. White in the Word of God points us to righteousness. The emphasis of the white hair is not age but purity. It might also speak of the eternality of God's Son.

III. His Eyes

Those speak of the penetrating knowledge of Christ. You cannot keep the Lord from seeing both what good you do and what evil you may do. His eyes penetrate, as does fire, and He sees all. Ps 139:2 says, “Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.”

IV. His Feet

They testify of His judgment. Daniel speaks of the Lord's throne as “fiery flames and his wheels are burning fire.” In Rev. 19 at Armageddon Christ comes in righteousness to judge and make war. He is the Lord strong and mighty in battle (Ps. 24:8).

V. His Voice

It points to the mighty power of Jesus. His voice is as the “sound of many waters.” It booms forth as nothing else can do. The sound of His voice should cause us to be in awe at His power.

VI. His Hand

The right hand is the place of blessing. In His right hand are seven stars. The stars are the pastors of those local churches to whom he was writing. God's ministers never have to fear men for they are in the right hand of the Lord. They are His instruments whom God will guard and care for as they labor for Him.

VII. His Mouth

Out of his mouth came a two edged sword. This figuratively speaks to us of the power of God's Word. Compare Heb. 4:12. God's word is like dynamite to break up stony hearts.

VIII. His Face

It is like the sun shines in its strength. None of us can stand and stare at the sun, but one day in a glorified body, we can gaze on Him.
