Telling the Time
Read Colossians 4:5. Time is such an important thing. Christians are like clocks, we are to reveal what time it is in relation to lives of God's people and the coming of the Lord. Clocks and watches tell time; that is the reason for their existence. Before there were clocks, hourglasses were used to tell the time. Even candles were used many years ago to seek to reveal the time. In relation to time the Lord Jesus said, “I must work while it is day, the night cometh when no man can work.” The Lord Jesus knew the value of time. Richard Baxter said two very important things about time. First, he said, “Be more careful of not losing it than you would of losing your money.” As well, Baxter said, “Be more careful to escape that person, action, or course of life that would rob you of your time than you would be to escape thieves and robbers.”
I. It Is A Sinful Time
Our day was revealed by the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1‑5. Sin does several things. First, it robs. It can rob the lost person of heaven and the saints of the richest of God's blessings. Secondly it resists. It resists the ways, the Word and the will of God. Our most enormous and devastating problem is sin.
II. It Is A Suspenseful Time
The world we are living in is full of suspense. We do not know what might happen from one day to the next. Many nations are equipped with nuclear bombs that can wipe out multiplied thousands in a very short time. In Luke 21:25 Jesus speaks of the “distress of nations with perplexity.” First, there is suspense about the chosen people of God — the nation of Israel. In addition, there is suspense about the chosen people of God — the church. It would make us shudder if we knew what the church will face in days ahead. God holds our tomorrow in His hands!
III. It Is A Suggestive Time
The very day in which we live demands that the church make the most of its time. All through life the wheels go round and round, like a clock's wheels, till death comes, and breaks into the case, and stops the works. In Eph. 5:16 the Bible says, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
IV. It Is Salvation Time
2 Cor. 6:2 says, “Now is the accepted time.” Why be saved? Life is short. Death is certain. Hell is a reality. Like a clock, let's minister to others, telling the time.
