Men Who Left A Mark
Proverbs 10:7 says, “The memory of the just is blessed but the name of the wicked shall rot.” I read about Dr. Jerry Falwell, who is now in glory with the Lord. He started a church in his hometown, Lynchburg, Virginia. He knocked on 100 doors a day to tell people about Jesus and the new Thomas Road Baptist Church. Within a year, more than 800 people were regularly attending the church and Lynchburg has never been the same since. In mid-life, he started a Christian college which is now known as Liberty University. He encouraged Christian people to go out to the polls and vote. He left some marks on this generation which we will never forget. There are some men in the Bible who left a mark for the Lord.
I. Preaching Peter
(Acts 2) - People remember Simon Peter for many things. So many major on how he denied the Lord three times before the cock crowed. But, I remember him for his courage as he stood at Pentecost and telling those Jews they with wicked hands had slain the Lord Jesus Christ. Thousands were saved as a result of the bold, Spirit-filled preaching of Peter. That is the mark he left behind.
II. Persistent Daniel
(Dan. 6) I am sure something negative could be said of every person, for we are people with fallen natures. Daniel left a mark of dedication. He refused to stop calling upon his God, even after King Darius signed a decree that no man was to pray to any god for thirty days. God tells us to pray (Matt. 7:7,8). When the laws of men contradict the laws of God, you should follow the laws of God. Daniel stood in front of his window and unashamedly prayed unto his God.
III. Powerful Elijah
(1 Kings 18). You could remember him by the brook crying out for the Lord to take his life. I choose to remember him as a man of great power with God. He was able to call down fire from God out of heaven to devour the sacrifice at Mt. Carmel. Most people could not call down a spark, nevertheless a flame. He could pray and shut up the heavens, or pray and open them up. What a man of power Elijah was in his life!
IV. Persuasive John
(Jn. 13:35). John the Beloved is known as the Apostle of love. You have heard the old saying that says, “You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.” John could be remembered as a very persuasive person because of the love he possessed and encouraged. Too many time folks think you can get things done with an angry spirit, when much more is accomplished through someone who allows the love of God to flow through them. Remember John the Beloved because of the persuasiveness of God in his life. What will you be known for when you leave for heaven?
