Evil and the Christian
The Bible says in Prov. 3:7, “Be not wise in thine own eyes, fear the Lord and depart from evil.” The Bible says the believer is to “depart from evil.” “Depart” has the idea of “turning away from, to avoid or to remove yourself” from evil. I heard a little statement years ago that says, “Think no evil, see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil and do no evil.”
I. Think No Evil
The Bible says, “the thought of foolishness is sin” (Prov. 24:9). It is so easy for you to allow evil thoughts to enter into your mind. In Phil. 4:8 we are told what to allow in our minds. The greatest battles we will ever fight in life is in our minds. We are told to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor. 10:5). In this day of widespread wickedness people of all ages should turn away from it and avoid it that the thought life might be pure.
II. See No Evil
In 1 John 2:16 the Apostle John speaks of the “lust of the eyes.” Someone said the eyes are the gates to the soul. What we gaze upon with our eyes can negatively or positively affect the inner man. We are not to set our eyes on evil, but how often do we forget that when we watch the television screen. Sinful actions can be stimulated through spiritually detrimental things we let in through the eye gate. God's people are not to be careless with the eyes.
III. Hear No Evil
I used to hear a little song when I was a kid that said, “Oh be careful little ears what you hear, for the Father up above, He is looking down in love, so be careful little ears what you hear.” You should refuse to listen to Rock Music which will draw you away from God and dull your spiritual sensitivity. As well, you should refuse to be a garbage can for people to deposit their gossip. We should be seeking to hear God's voice (Heb. 3:15; 4:7).
IV. Speak No Evil
Eph. 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” Our tongues should be used to glorify God, edify others, and spread the Gospel.
V. Do No Evil
When you are saved, grace teaches you to “deny” or say “no” to ungodliness (Titus 2:12). No believer has to practice sin.
