You and Our Lord's Return

Read 1 Cor. 11:26. That verse is given in the context of the Lord's Supper. When we partake of the elements of the fruit of the vine and the bread, we show forth Christ's death “until He comes.” Jesus is coming so what is your responsibility in light of it?

I. Be Looking For His Return

Phil. 3:20 says, “For our conversation is in heaven, from whence we look for the Savior…” We are to be looking for the Lord to come back the second time. Look tirelessly and confidently for Him to return.

II. Be Hasting His Return

“Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the Day of the Lord” (2 Pet. 3:12). It does not mean we can hurry up the coming of the Lord. The word “hasting” means “to desire earnestly.” We should be constantly desiring earnestly the Lord Jesus to return.

III. Be Praying For His Return

“Even so, come Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20). This request of John seems to be a prayer coming out of a heart earnestly desiring the Lord to return for His dear children in this world. I believe each day, especially in his times of greatest troubles, he cried, "Even so come."

IV. Be Occupying Until He Returns

In Lk. 19:13 Jesus said, “Occupy till I come.” “Occupy” means “to carry on business.” We are a part of the greatest business in the universe, the Lord's business. We should work and witness for Him daily.

V. Be Watching For His Return

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh” (Matt. 25:13). I wonder if we are “watching” for Jesus' coming as we should in our lives? “Watch” means “give attention to or to take heed lest we be suddenly overtaken.” Expectancy involves an expectation of His return.

VI. Be Loving His Return

2 Tim. 4:8 speaks of those who “love His appearing.” What does it mean to love His appearing? This speaks of those who live constantly with a longing for Christ's appearing. Do you anticipate the Lord's coming joyously? The one who receives this special reward is one who has his mind on Christ rather than himself.
