The Lord's Strength

(go to message list)

Ps 24:7-8, “Lift up your head, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” One thing is sure the Lord is strong and mighty.

I. The Dividing Power of His Strength

Read Psalm 136:11-13. It tells us that with a strong hand the Lord divided the waters of the Red Sea. That sea represented an obstacle to the deliverance of the children of Israel. This verse implies to us that God has the power to deliver His people no matter what the situation that lies before us. He can split the seas of opposition and of difficulty.

II. The Dearth of His Strength

In the Word of God we are told that we were “without strength” (Rom. 5:6) - just born that way. Although that was true, Christ died for the ungodly, when we were undeserving and hell bound, without God and without hope. We were powerless to save ourselves but not beyond His divine power to do so. The gift of Christ is the measure and proof of God's love. We were utterly helpless to help or redeem ourselves. Who would you die for — would it be a thief, murderer, a drunk driver, a person who has a serious social disease, just who? Jesus died for his weak enemies to make salvation possible for us.

III. The Delight in His Strength

What are you delighted in the most? It is that which you glory in the most. Are you glorying in His divine strength or in your own human strength? The Bible tells us in the New Testament, “Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might” (Eph. 6:10). To “delight” means “to take pleasure in or be pleased with.” When we see what the strong arm is able to do, it brings a heavenly, celestial, unfathomable strength to our spiritual lives. When we realize how weak we actually are, how quickly it leads us to lean on the strength of Almighty God. We have much weakness so thank God for the strength He has available for us.

IV. The Declaration of His Strength

Psm. 140:7 says, “O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.” We are to tell others how strong our God is! He not only saves us initially from the penalty of our sin, He gives us daily power and victory to overcome Satan in our lives. Satan is powerful but only God is omnipotent. How long has it been since you told someone going through a time of weakness how strong the Lord is? He is so mighty that He upholds all things by the Word of His power (Heb. 1:3).

V. The Development of His Strength

Read 2 Cor. 12:9.
