A Mini-Sermon From Pastor Walker:

God Said It, I Believe It, How About You?

Read Gen. 28 verses 10-22. Especially notice verse 15 which says, “And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” This is said in relation to Jacob’s dream at Bethel. As he sees the ladder from heaven to earth, angels ascending, He is reminded of God’s promise to Jacob’s father Abraham. Let’ see this verse, as God reiterates His Divine promise from several different aspects.

I. A Divine Partnership Is Announced. God says, “I am with thee”(v.15a) There is no greater promise in the Bible pertaining to this life found for the child of God than this wonderful statement. It is a powerful statement for God says “I am”. It is also a perceptible statement (“with”) that suggests that we can know that He is real and that His presence is known. Moreover, it is a personal statement because we find the word “thee”. What a joy that God knows who I am and that He desires to communicate and care for me and for you! God is with those He calls and sends forth to work for Him.

II. A Divine Protection Is Asserted. God also reminded Abraham of that fact of His protection. The Lord said, “I will keep thee in all places where thou goest “(v.15b). The Hebrew word “keep”can have the idea of watching and guarding, preserving, or paying much attention to something. Our personal preservation does not depend upon our wit, our ability and our plans, but it rests in the person of the Lord. Human protection is limited due to the limitations of human beings. God is omnipotent, which means He has unlimited and unrestricted ability and power. The word “keep” is used of tending to a garden (Gen.2:15), a flock (Gen.30:31) or a house (Ex. 12:3). Why do we need to be captivated by fear when the Lord is watching over us day and night? The Lord protects us with an authority and power that can’t be excelled by anyone else.

III. A Divine Promise Is Made. God declares, “ I will bring thee again into His land”(v.15c). This land is the land promised to Abraham but is now promised also to Jacob and his descendants. When God makes you a promises, you do not have to wonder and have doubts about its fulfillment. Our response to a promise from the Lord should always be the response of faith. Faith says, “I do not know how it will be done, but I believe God will do it because He said He would. To do otherwise would be an insult to the Almighty.

IV. A Divine Purpose Is Declared. The Lord stated, “I will not leave thee until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of”(v.15d). God’s aim was to show Himself faithful in the care of His people. Some people just do things, having no purpose what they do, but God always seek to bring honor and glory to Himself, because He was before anything else existed. Whatever He does is for our good and His Divine glory. God said it, I believe it, how about you?
